Every week we open the doors of the Bay School, welcoming children within the community to our OpenArts After School Program. This high-energy program introduces students to a variety of techniques, media, and artists. It is open to any child who wishes to participate. Students will have some freedom to explore a variety of artistic mediums. ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Reigniting Your Creative Spark (October 27, 2026)

Do you recall being creative as a child? You would create as the moment spoke to you, coloring outside the black and white lines, letting your imagination be your guide. At some time, someone or even something may have happened or was said to instill a feeling of insecurity and limit this natural creative flow.

Do you find yourself saying, “I’m not creative,” or “I’m not a good artist?”

In this class we will work through existing blocks using various materials, mediums, and ideas, exploring paints, pastels, ink, color theory, and collage with a focus on building confidence in your creative expression.
This is an excellent opportunity to find what you love working with as a creative tool. There will be visual and writing prompts to help you let go of any limitations that restrict your creativity.

This is an ongoing class with new prompts for each class. No experience is required, only your willingness to reignite your existing inner creative spark during a journey of self-exploration in a safe environment to reclaim your unique and talented self!

Advance registration is required. Each class session needs a minimum of two students, so bring a friend!

Class is held the 4th Tuesday of each mont.

Musician Nina Buzby will hold classes for all ages and skill levels. Classes are for individuals. She began playing cello in the Richmond Public Schools when she was ten, and studied privately with Paul Cartwright and Gesila Depcat of the Richmond Symphony. Nina was a member of the Richmond Symphony for five years and currently performs widely in the tri-county area as part of the Strings and Things network of local musicians. She also performs with the Tri Con Brio in the Richmond area, and The Festival Musicians and Rappahannock Chamber Soloists in the Kilmarnock area. Nina is a founding member of The Tuneful Teachers and greatly enjoys arranging instrumental music and composing vocal music. Class will be either 30 or 60 minutes in length and will be scheduled at registration. Instruments are not provided and are the responsibility of the student.

Handpressed Printmaking: Mixed Media Gelli Plate Workshop (November 14, 2026)

Get into the print zone using a Gelli Plate. You will build layers of colors and patterns using handmade stencils, stamps, plants, and found items to create unique one of a kind art prints. You will also experiment with paint pens and other drawing tools for a creative printmaking composition. Bring an apron to class. Open to all skill levels.

Optional items to bring: any flat found items with interesting texture or shape to print, and a magazine you don't mind cutting up. I will provide a 5" x 5" student Gelli plate for your use during class. You may purchase or make your own plate before class, and we can cut class paper to your plate's size. Please keep self-purchased plates at or below 8" x 10".

Students Will learn the art of crafting a Williamsburg-style Della Robbia wreath. Provided: Wreath forms, greens, greening pins, Nandina berries, dried oranges, pinecones, oyster shells, baby’s breath, statice, yarrow and bows. Students should bring a pair of gloves, handheld pruning shears, and 7-9 pieces of fruit which can include apples, lemons, limes, oranges, pomegranate etc. Other items such as feathers, cinnamon sticks, and lotus pods can be incorporated if you wish to bring them. Also, if you have a special evergreen in your yard you want to use to personalize your wreath, bring in a half a dozen clippings to include in your wreath. And of course, bring your imagination! Beginner Wheel Throwing (January 22, 2027)

This class is for those who want to learn the basics of wheel throwing. Beginning students will learn to mold a ball of clay and shape it into various objects: bowls, mugs, cylinders, etc. Students with previous experience will learn techniques to make more complicated forms and improve their skills. This class is an excellent opportunity for students to explore clay on the wheel in a fun and creative atmosphere.

Students should bring their own tools, buckets, aprons, and towels. There also will be tools available to use, if needed. While enrolled in this class, you may use the facilities during open studio time to practice what you have learned.

This class is an adventure in working with precious metal clay to learn basic/intermediate techniques to create jewelry designs in Art Clay Silver. We will be constructing a beautiful silver clay charm chain necklace or bracelet which will show remarkable detail and design. The pictured set is just one option and many other style options are available.

Art Clay Silver is a product especially formulated for objects that can be created and fired in the same day with outstanding results. Art Clay Silver is silver (.999) mixed with water and an organic binder. It is soft and easy to work with simple tools. Once it is fired at 1558 degrees for one hour the product is .999 fine silver. Art Clay silver is available in several formulations such as syringes, paste, silver coated paper, and overlay paste. Art Clay Silver projects can be combined with ceramics, glass fusions, kiln fired, enameled, and torch enameled. Art Clay Silver is a remarkable product that can be used to make beautiful jewelry.

The techniques covered in this class include how to manipulate the clay using new techniques or to expand on the skills and experiences previously learned. New techniques covered in this class include how to construct a necklace or bracelet components in metal clay and connect the components together to make a necklace or bracelet using new techniques in necklace construction. Have you always wondered how to cut a mat for framing photos and artwork? Using a Logan 301 mat cutter, we will cut mats with the outside dimension of 8 x 10 and 11 x 14. This class is an adventure in working with precious metal clay to learn basic/intermediate techniques to create jewelry designs in Art Clay Silver. We will be constructing a beautiful silver clay Cuban sea glass design pendant which will show remarkable detail and design. The design shown is just one option, with many other style options available.

Art Clay Silver is a product especially formulated for objects that can be created and fired on the same day with outstanding results. Art Clay Silver is silver (.999) mixed with water and an organic binder. It is soft and easy to work with simple tools. Once it is fired at 1558 degrees for one hour the product is .999 fine silver. Art Clay silver is available in several formulations such as syringes, paste, silver coated paper and overlay paste. Art Clay Silver projects can be combined with ceramics, glass fusions, kiln fired, enameled, and torch enameled. Art Clay Silver is a remarkable product that can be used to make beautiful jewelry.

The techniques covered in this class include how to manipulate the clay using new techniques or to expand on the skills and experiences previously learned. New techniques covered in this class include how to construct a prong setting for genuine sea glass in metal clay and add the components together to make a pendant with an ocean life theme. We will be using a variety of tools to support the design such as texture mats, molds, finishing, sanding techniques, and how to make simple repairs.

Join us for a 3-day workshop focused on representational realism. We will move beyond "copying" a scene to capturing its essence, poetry, and atmosphere through fundamental painting techniques and personal interpretation. We will guide you through the process of carving their features. Then, using a classic blue glaze wash and a watercolor technique, we will add the details to the clay portrait. This class is an adventure in working with precious metal clay to learn basic/intermediate techniques to create jewelry designs in Art Clay Silver. We will be constructing a beautiful silver clay Gingko leaf design pendant which will show remarkable detail and design. The techniques covered in this class include how to manipulate the clay using new techniques or to expand on the skills and experiences previously learned. New techniques covered in this class include how to construct a pendant in metal clay using natural leaves and add the components together to make a pendant with a nature inspired theme. The Boom Loom is a small, portable metal loom. It is used with a pattern bar that separates the warp threads, so all you need to do to weave a row is to pass the yarn straight through to create a woven row! Then, the pattern bar is turned to the next position, and the following row is woven. Creating weave designs is as easy as turning the pattern bar in different sequences. Using patterns and colors, the result will be a small weaving. The weaving will go in the mat provided, and you will have a work of art, ready to frame.

Alla prima painting, or all at once, is a direct painting technique where the entire painting is completed in one session. The result is often fresh and expressive. Painting from life, we will focus on still lifes with flowers in the studio. If weather permits, we may complete a painting session outdoors. This workshop’s main objective is to teach artists how to see and paint with more confidence and learn how to create wonderfully energized plein air paintings, which capture the unique light and atmosphere the artist envisioned from the moment of his or her inspiration.

Each day will include a demo, short lecture, AM painting scene, PM painting scene, solid individual guidance, and valuable critiques with group critique optional. Drawing, composition, value, color, edges, and paint and surface manipulation will be covered. A materials list will be provided.

Beginner to advanced students are welcome, and students may work in oils, acrylics, and/or watercolor.

Payment is due by June 1, 2027.
