Musician Nina Buzby will hold classes for all ages and skill levels. Classes are for individuals. She began playing cello in the Richmond Public Schools when she was ten, and studied privately with Paul Cartwright and Gesila Depcat of the Richmond Symphony. Nina was a member of the Richmond Symphony for five years and currently performs widely in the tri-county area as part of the Strings and Things network of local musicians. She also performs with the Tri Con Brio in the Richmond area, and The Festival Musicians and Rappahannock Chamber Soloists in the Kilmarnock area. Nina is a founding member of The Tuneful Teachers and greatly enjoys arranging instrumental music and composing vocal music. Class will be either 30 or 60 minutes in length and will be scheduled at registration. Instruments are not provided and are the responsibility of the student.

You bring the paper; we provide the rest. In this two-day class you will learn how to create journals made from a variety of papers that you love. We will create decorative hard covers and bind them and your collection of papers together into a journal you will treasure. Bring an old thick catalog of some sort, pair of scissors to cut paper, sketch paper, sturdy tracing paper, scrap paper, failed watercolor paintings, printed paper, lined school paper, old music scores, wrapping paper, packing paper, whatever paper you love. I will teach you how to turn them into a book which you can decorate in a variety of ways, and you will go home with all the supplies you need to make more. The journals can be used in a variety of ways: a diary, a sketchbook, a collection of quotations, holiday gift lists, holiday card lists, to do lists, gardening journal, bird watching record, travel journal, etc. This class is for beginners, but all skill levels are welcome.

Let your imagination soar when you create magical dragon eyes. This is a two-day class. On Day One, students will use clay to make scale patterns to give each dragon a unique look. After your dragons are fired, you will return to paint a magical eye that will be added to your pottery piece. Using acrylic paint, you then will paint your dragon. Finished work can be hung on the wall for display.

This class is an adventure in working with precious metal clay to learn beginner/intermediate techniques to create jewelry designs in Art Clay Silver. Art Clay Silver is a product especially formulated for objects that can be created and fired in the same day with outstanding results. Art Clay Silver once fired is .999 pure fine silver and is available in several formulations, such as syringes, paste, silver-coated paper, and overlay paste. Art Clay Silver projects can be combined with ceramics, glass fusions, kiln- fired, enameled, and torch-enameled.

Topics covered in this class will include manipulating the clay and expanding on skills and experience previously acquired. New techniques covered in this class include how to create a pendant using silver metal clay, creating textural elements using a variety of tools and silver materials, and setting a colorful cubic zirconia stone. We will use a variety of tools and techniques to support the design, such as finishing, sanding, and how to make simple repairs. Open to all skill levels.

Do you recall being creative as a child? You would create as the moment spoke to you, coloring outside the black and white lines, letting your imagination be your guide. At some time, someone or even something may have happened or was said to instill a feeling of insecurity and limit this natural creative flow.

Do you find yourself saying, “I’m not creative,” or “I’m not a good artist?”

In this class we will work through existing blocks using various materials, mediums, and ideas, exploring paints, pastels, ink, color theory, and collage with a focus on building confidence in your creative expression.
This is an excellent opportunity to find what you love working with as a creative tool. There will be visual and writing prompts to help you let go of any limitations that restrict your creativity.

This is an ongoing class with new prompts for each class. No experience is required, only your willingness to reignite your existing inner creative spark during a journey of self-exploration in a safe environment to reclaim your unique and talented self!

Advance registration is required. Each class session needs a minimum of two students, so bring a friend!

Class is held the 4th Tuesday of each mont.

This class is for those who want to learn the basics of wheel throwing. Beginning students will learn to mold a ball of clay and shape it into various objects: bowls, mugs, cylinders, etc. Students with previous experience will learn techniques to make more complicated forms and improve their skills. This class is an excellent opportunity for students to explore clay on the wheel in a fun and creative atmosphere.

Students should bring their own tools, buckets, aprons, and towels. There also will be tools available to use, if needed. While enrolled in this class, you may use the facilities during open studio time to practice what you have learned.

Enjoy two days of painting reflections in watercolors! Bring your photos of shiny objects and let's paint arrangements of jars and vases, clear glass objects, windows, rain puddles, and water.

Your instructor will begin with a review of the basic skills that every painter should know and move on to composing the scene. Then learn how to build up glazes to convey reflective surfaces. Expect multiple demonstrations and lots of individual coaching. This class is for both the experienced beginner and more advanced students.

Tie-Dye is an ancient art-form dating back thousands of years and found in cultures all over the world. It involves folding, twisting or bunching cloth, and then binding it to maintain a resist during the dying process. After the dye sets, the fabric is rinsed and the binding removed. Then a "TA DA" moment to reveal an amazing, one-of-a-kind piece of art you can be proud to wear or frame and hang on the wall. Art Clay Silver is a product especially formulated for objects that can be created and fired in the same day with outstanding results. Art Clay Silver is silver (.999) mixed with water and an organic binder. It is soft and easy to work with simple tools. Once it is fired at 1558 degrees for one hour the product is .999 fine silver. Experience the fun and satisfaction of enhancing your wheel-thrown vessels with carved designs. Edges, grooves, and curves emphasize form, give depth to a surface, and provide places for glazes to pool and thin. Students will learn how to plan for carving when throwing a vessel, mark their own thrown vessels using design elements that are effective in carved clay, and model surfaces to create ridges, highlights, and shadows. The first class will include explanation, demonstration, and time to throw your vessels. The next two sessions will be devoted to marking and carving your leather-hard vessels. This class is an adventure in working with precious metal clay to learn basic/intermediate techniques to create jewelry designs in Art Clay Sterling Silver. We will be constructing a beautiful adjustable bypass ring which will show remarkable detail and design. The pictured ring is just one option and many other options are available.

Art Clay Sterling Silver is a product especially formulated for objects that can be created and fired in the same day with outstanding results. Art Clay Sterling Silver is silver (.950) mixed with water and an organic binder. It is soft and easy to work with simple tools. Once it is fired at 1558 degrees for one hour the product is .950 sterling silver. Art Clay silver is available in several formulations such as syringes, paste, silver coated paper, and overlay paste. Art Clay Sterling Silver projects can be combined with ceramics, glass fusions, kiln fired, enameled, and torch enameled. The techniques covered in this class include how to manipulate the clay, new techniques or to expand on the skills and experiences previously learned. In this 2-day class students will use PVC poles as bases and an eclectic mix of materials. Projects feature reflective glass, mirror, stained glass, and "pique assiette" (incorporating broken china or pottery). Students are encouraged to bring materials that you would like to add to your design such as broken dishes, tiles, beads, mirrors etc. If you can glue it down you can mosaic it, just keep in mind the materials you bring should be able to withstand being outside. Students will have to provide their own materials for installation at home. We will go over installation in your garden and the materials you will need to purchase. Please bring a caulk gun to class.

Get into the print zone using a Gelli Plate. You will build layers of colors and patterns using handmade stencils, stamps, plants, and found items to create unique one of a kind art prints. You will also experiment with paint pens and other drawing tools for a creative printmaking composition. Bring an apron to class. Open to all skill levels.

Optional items to bring: any flat found items with interesting texture or shape to print, and a magazine you don't mind cutting up. I will provide a 5" x 5" student Gelli plate for your use during class. You may purchase or make your own plate before class, and we can cut class paper to your plate's size. Students Will learn the art of crafting a Williamsburg-style Della Robbia wreath. Provided: Wreath forms, greens, greening pins, Nandina berries, dried oranges, pinecones, oyster shells, baby’s breath, statice, yarrow and bows. Students should bring a pair of gloves, handheld pruning shears, and 7-9 pieces of fruit which can include apples, lemons, limes, oranges, pomegranate etc. Other items such as feathers, cinnamon sticks, and lotus pods can be incorporated if you wish to bring them. Also, if you have a special evergreen in your yard you want to use to personalize your wreath, bring in a half a dozen clippings to include in your wreath. And of course, bring your imagination!
